Member of the Week: Martha Avelar

Martha Avelar of Rite Aid #5512 has been in the industry for 17 years. She started as a stock clerk, moved over to the Ice Cream counter, and is now a PAC Coordinator.

Avelar’s hobbies include television and dancing.

When asked what inspired her to get more involved she said, “I saw so many people being treated bad by management and wanted to help. This is why we have a union, protection on the job.”

Q: How would your life be different if you were not a union member?

A: “It would not be the same. It’s sad knowing how different it is at non union stores.”

Q: If you could make a change in the workplace, what would it be?

A: “I would want our managers to be in the union too. That way they have what we have.”

Q: What in your life are you most proud of?

A: “My two kids.”

Q: What is it you like most about your job?

A: “I really like all of the people I work with, they tell me things wouldn’t be the same without me.”
