Member of the Week: Maureen Collins

Maureen Collins of Vons #1638 has been in the industry for 12 years. She started out as a courtesy clerk and has since moved through almost every position in the store. She is currently a supervisor at the front end and key carrier.

Collins’ hobbies include reading, being involved with her church, supporting the Dodgers and her two Bernese Mountain dogs.

When asked what inspired her to get more involved she said, “My dad was a teamster and after I was hired I immediately started going to union meetings. It has always interested me and I wanted to be more involved. I wanted to help speak up for those that don’t do it for themselves. I asked the union rep for our store if I could take the steward position and that was that.”

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: “I like being with the public. I like people in general and though I am good at my job I just wanted to be a checker. Even as a kid my sister and I would play store and I was the checker.”

Q: How would your life be different if you were not a union member?

A: “I wouldn’t have the protections the contract gives me, I wouldn’t make as much, and I wouldn’t have the benefits that I do.”

Q: What in your life are you most proud of?

A: “I am proud of my family.”

Q: If you could make any single change in your workplace what would it be?

A: “To have more hours in the store. It’s hard to get everything done in the time we are given.”
