Member of the Week: Valerie Alfred

Valerie Alfred of Food 4 Less has been in the industry since 1966. She worked her way up from the bakery to GM Lead.

When asked what got her more involved in her Union she replied, “I have been a member of Local 324 since 1966 and have seen the changes in the grocery industry both good and bad. I wanted to be informed and help new employees understand a few things. Becoming a steward seemed like a good idea.”

Q: What is it you like most about your job?

A: “I’m in charge of General Merchandise in my store by Disneyland, and that gives me the chance to meet people from all walks of life and all over the world.”

Q: How would your life be different if you were not a union member?

A: “I wouldn’t have the securities I have, the benefits, and I wouldn’t know that my voice is heard.”

Alfred’s hobbies include Watching Angels Baseball, Traveling and girls softball. Alfred also participates in the CHOC (Children’s Hospital Orange County) Walk and does an Epilepsy walk to raise money and awareness each year.
