Extend COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave

Extend COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave

HELP EXTEND COVID-19 SUPPLEMENTAL PAID SICK LEAVE

California rightly provided essential workers with up to 10 days of COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave earlier this year after hearing from your union about how critical it was to be able to take time off to recover from illness or take care of a family member who is sick. Now, as we face yet another surge of illness, it’s imperative that the state extend this life-saving law until the end of the year. Here’s how you can help:

  1. Call your legislators to let them know that UFCW members continue to face the threat of illness with no protections and California MUST EXTEND COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave. Workers should not have to choose between going to work sick and putting food on the table. Look up your legislators here: https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/
    1. Say this: “Hi, my name is [your name] with UFCW Local 324 and I live in [city you live in]. California needs to extend the COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave until the end of the year. [Say how having this paid sick leave has helped you this year].  [Legislator] must support extending COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave. Thank you for your time.
  2. Post on social media to let your community know how important it is to extend this life-saving law and ensure workers have access to 10 days of paid sick leave in the future. Tag your legislators in the posts!

We know California workers with low wages – disproportionately women and people of color – are far less likely to have adequate benefit packages and may be forced to take time off from work without pay or even risk losing their job if they or someone they love has COVID-19 or any illness.

California has to act to extend supplemental paid sick leave – our essential workers, our families, our frontline communities, and our entire state’s ability to reach the light at the end of the tunnel depend on it.

In Solidarity,
