Member of the Week: Devi Snyder
Devi Snyder of Kaiser in Downey has been working for Kaiser for eight years. She started in the Mail Order Processing Center as an assistant and is now a Union Steward and Labor Liaison/Sponsor for Local 324. She is also Labor Co-Lead for Regional Ops Labor Management Partnership (LMP).
Snyder’s hobbies include photography, she likes to take pictures of just about anything; helping her friend sell homemade jams-jellies-and pickles at the Farmer’s Market; watching Dexter & Homelands; and serving the homeless.
When asked what inspired her to get more involved she said, “A strong union voice means a more balanced work area. A cousin of mine was president of a Teamsters local in New York and I would listen to some of the successes he had, such as getting more women involved in Union Activities and jobs. My rep, Debbie strongly suggested me for the Liaison position which gave me the opportunity to make a difference and use my passion for change.”
Q: How would your life be different if you were not a union member?
A: “I have been employed in non-union areas and you are at the whim of the person either next to you or above. No security and no guarantees. A sigh of relief is what I felt working in a union job.”
Q: What in your life are you most proud of?
A: “Serving those who live without homes, and 15 years at Children’s Hospital in LA in the ECMO unit as a cuddler. ”
Q: If you could make a single change in the workplace, what would it be?
A: “I would have labor be part of the interviewing process for hiring supervisors.”
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: “I am a great believer in LMP and am glad that I get to work with people that want to accomplish the same goals.”
