Member of the Week: Ruth Hall
Ruth Hall of Vons 2803, has been in the industry for 26 years. She started in the Service Deli and after three years was told, “You’re the Department Manager”. She has been in the same store for nearly 16 years.
Hall’s hobbies include spending as much time with her family as possible and playing on her co-ed softball team.
When asked what inspired her to get more involved she said, “At 19 I liked the idea of a union but knew I would have to get more involved in order to understand what I was reading in the contract. I have been here a long time and know pretty much everyone in the store, so it makes it easier to pay attention to what’s going on, and if a co-worker needs help.”
Q: How would your life be different if you were not a union member?
A: “I wouldn’t have the benefits that I do now.”
Q: If you could make a change in the workplace, what would it be?
A: “I would want more help. Hours are scarce and it would be great to have either hours or more help.”
Q: What in your life are you most proud of?
A: “My family.”
Q: What is it you like most about your job.
A: “The staff, people in my crew, and the flexibility a job in this industry gives me. When my kids were younger working here allowed me to spend time with them while having a good paying job and benefits for my family.”
