Once again, Kaiser Permanente came to the table without making meaningful movement on the issues that matter most to healthcare workers. They still refuse to address the real-world staffing and patient care challenges we have raised, and they have not offered fair, competitive wage increases that reflect the value of our work. And what’s worse is that they’re blaming us and our union for their stall tactics.
Even with KP’s lack of progress on core issues, we did secure important tentative agreements that strengthen member benefits and our long-term strategy. However, no agreement has been made regarding ATBs and the Alliance continues to hold strong to ensure you get the raises you deserve.
Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust (BHMT) Funding
BHMT benefits continue to exist because healthcare workers have fought for them at the bargaining table. With increased enrollment and rising program costs, expanded funding was essential.
We secured a 40 percent increase in BHMT funding, moving from 0.5 percent to 0.7 percent of payroll. This means 55 million dollars in additional resources over four years dedicated directly to member education, career development, and training.
Strategic Leadership Council (SLC)
We reached an agreement with KP to form a joint Strategic Leadership Council that will address major nationwide challenges, including federal funding cuts and membership declines.
The SLC will:
• Create a high-level forum for national strategic discussions
• Require KP to share its plans for navigating these challenges
• Allow us to raise proposals on insourcing work and expanding internal care
Neither side is required to accept any initiative. Where there is agreement, we will move forward with action plans. Where there is not agreement, both Kaiser and the Alliance keep all their rights.
You can view a video update from the Alliance of Healthcare Unions here
What’s Next
We will continue pushing Kaiser to address the real staffing, pay equity, and patient care issues impacting workers every day and to deliver the fair contract you deserve.
We are working to schedule more bargaining sessions and will let you know once those are confirmed.
Take Action
We need to keep showing Kaiser that Kaiser workers, our patients and communities are united, organized, and ready to fight for safe staffing, quality care, and a fair contract.

This week and last week’s negotiations with Kaiser were difficult, with little progress at the National bargaining table. We did achieve a minor TA on language around lactation time, but Kaiser hasn’t moved on their economic proposals – and neither did we. Despite Kaiser’s stalling tactics, we remain united in our push for contract alignment, fair wage increases, pay equity, and a voice in staffing. Our goal is to get a contract we can recommend to you, and we’re coming back to the table for National Bargaining next Tuesday, November 4, to push for that.
In the meantime, the Labor Management Partnership (LMP) is still on hold. Do not participate in any LMP related activities until further notice.
Pharmacy ULP Strike Update
Striking is always our last resort, but pharmacy members must remain strike-ready in response to Kaiser’s Unfair Labor Practices. If the Bargaining Committee decides it’s time to issue our 10-day ULP strike notice, you will be notified by your UFCW Local. Our vote prepares Kaiser Pharmacy members to take action when the Pharmacy contract expires tomorrow, November 1. It does not mean we are on an Unfair Labor Practice strike right now. If you walk off the job before the union declares a strike, you can be disciplined and/or fired. REMEMBER: your local is the best source of information, and you’ll hear ANY news from us first.
CLS members – since your contract doesn’t expire until next year, you can’t strike at this time, but you can support Alliance siblings as well as your UFCW siblings should they be forced to strike. This misalignment in expiration dates is one of our key priorities in these negotiations as aligning our contracts strengthens our collective voice and ensures we can stand together in true unity.

October 15, 2025
We’ve spoken loud and clear.
This week, 2,200 Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy members across Southern California came together and overwhelmingly voted YES to authorize an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike against Kaiser for breaking the law.
This vote sends a strong message to Kaiser: We’ve had enough of their union-busting tactics that undermine workers and silence our voices. And if they thought Kaiser members could be scared away from standing up for our rights, they just found out that they are very wrong.
What does this mean?
This vote prepares Kaiser Pharmacy members to take action when the Pharmacy contract expires November 1. It does not mean we are on an Unfair Labor Practice strike right now. If you walk off the job before the union declares a strike, you can be disciplined and/or fired. REMEMBER: your local is the best source of information, and you’ll hear ANY news from us first.
Meanwhile, Alliance unions OFNHP, UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, UNITE HERE Local 5, and HNHP went on strike on Tuesday and will remain on strike until Sunday, October 19. Reach out to your local union for information on how to support an Alliance strike line near you before/after your shift, or on your lunch break.
CLS members – since your contract doesn’t expire until next year, you can’t strike at this time, but you can support Alliance siblings as well as your UFCW siblings should they be forced to strike. This misalignment in expiration dates is one of the things we are trying to fix in these negotiations.
What’s next?
An Unfair Labor Practice strike is always a last resort, and we will continue to push Kaiser to do the right thing and come back to the table to bargain in good faith. We are hopeful that Kaiser will get its act together after witnessing the 46,000 Alliance workers on strike this week and seeing that UFCW is ready to join a potential second wave of a strike. With this strike vote, we’re now prepared to join forces with our Alliance siblings if Kaiser continues to commit unfair labor practices that undermine our rights. Remember, you will always be the first to know when we take action.
The pause in LMP Partnership continues. Until further notice, UFCW will suspend participation in LMP councils, committees, and initiatives, while continuing all contractual meetings and grievance processes.
If you have any questions about what’s happening at the table, the ULP strike authorization, or anything else, reach out to your Bargaining Committee Member, Steward, or Union Representative.

KAISER UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE STRIKE FAQs
Below are some frequently asked questions we are hearing from our members about the contract and a possible Alliance of Healthcare Unions Unfair Labor Practice strike:
What is a strike?
A strike is when members vote to withhold their labor and do not report to work. Workers instead report to a picket line. A strike is a powerful tool for members to exercise and is always our last resort. Strikes are most effective when all employees in a struck location refuse to go to work.
What is an unfair labor practice (ULP)?
A ULP is when the company interferes with or discriminates against workers for their union activities. This violates federal labor law. Examples of a ULP include not allowing you to wear buttons, filming or keeping an eye on you at union actions, asking you if you would strike, or otherwise retaliating against you for union activity.
What is an unfair labor practice (ULP) strike?
A ULP strike is when workers walk off the job and/or do not go to work per their scheduled shift to protest unfair labor practices the company has allegedly committed.
What is an economic strike?
An economic strike is a work stoppage by workers seeking economic benefits such as wages, hours, or other working conditions. An economic strike happens when the employer, employees and their union are unable to reach a collective bargaining agreement and the most recent proposal on the table is unacceptable to employees.
How is an economic strike different from an unfair labor practice strike?
Striking to protest unfair labor practices (unlike an economic strike) means that workers can not be permanently replaced. In addition, workers can return to work without a contract being approved.
Would my job be protected while on an unfair labor practice strike?
Employees who strike to protest an unfair labor practice committed by their employer are called unfair labor practice strikers. When the strike ends, unfair labor practice strikers, absent serious misconduct on their part, are entitled to have their jobs back even if employees hired to do their work have to be discharged. (source: https://www.nlrb.gov/strikes)
What has to happen for us to strike?
These steps must be taken before we can strike:
- The contract must expire or otherwise not be in effect
- At least two-thirds of the workers in the bargaining unit who participate in the vote must vote to authorize negotiators to call a strike
- The negotiators (union leaders and workers on the bargaining committee) must decide WHEN to strike in order to make it most effective.
- Your union must give a 10-day notice to Kaiser with specific information on dates/locations. So you’ll know 10 days ahead of time when and where a strike would occur.
- A Union representative notifies workers it is time to walk out on the line.
AGAIN: DO NOT WALK OUT UNTIL YOUR UNION NOTIFIES YOU. If you walk out before that, you could be disciplined and/or fired by your employer.
What is the difference between a strike and a lockout?
A strike is an action initiated by the union while a lockout is an action initiated by the employer.
When would we go on strike?
We would not automatically go on strike and TAKING A STRIKE VOTE DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE ON STRIKE. A date would be set following a vote from the membership authorizing the strike and following strike sanctions from our International Union and Labor Councils. In the period between the strike authorization vote and the strike deadline, the union would continue to attempt to bargain with Kaiser. IF YOU WALK OFF THE JOB BEFORE THE UNION DECLARES A STRIKE, YOU CAN BE DISCIPLINED AND/OR FIRED.
If we go on strike, when would we picket?
Picket Captains would set a schedule along with the union representative for picket coverage during open hours to maximize our effort to send patients somewhere else while we are on strike.
If we go on strike, how long would we be on strike?
Nobody can predict how long we will be on strike. UFCW Local 7 in Colorado was on strike for 10 days and in Oregon, the workers’ strike was only 36 hours. ULP strikes can be for a set period. If we go on strike, our union leaders and bargaining committee will determine the length that is most strategic for us to be out. Ultimately, the length of time of a potential strike depends on a number of factors, but how well patients are honoring our strike is clearly the most important.
Will we receive pay while on strike?
The union has a strike fund that pays a benefit to striking workers. Here are the amounts the UFCW 324 Executive Board has approved:
Pharmacy Technicians, Assistants, Inventory Control Assistants, and Intern Pharmacists: $200/day
Would I lose my benefits/insurance if we go on strike?
You qualify for insurance on a skip month basis. If you work the qualifying hours in October, you have insurance in December. The union and the company can also bargain a strike settlement agreement that can ensure there is no gap in coverage.
* Because UFCW members fought hard and advocated for a bill in Sacramento, locked-out or striking workers now have access to Covered California if they lose their health insurance because of a labor dispute.
What will happen to members who cross the picket line if we go on strike?
Strikes are hard on everyone, but they’re only effective when ALL the members remain united and demand Kaiser treat their employees with dignity and respect. When members cross the picket line they are letting Kaiser know the members are divided. The UFCW 324 Executive Board has the authority to determine if and what actions may be taken against scabs.
What happens if members simply stay home? (Don’t walk the picket line but don’t go to work)
Again, strikes are most effective when ALL workers remain united and show Kaiser our power. When workers don’t walk the picket line that sends a message to the company that we are not united and may result in a weaker contract. Our strength has always been in our connection to our patients, and if we’re on strike, we need to make sure those patients don’t go to facilities until we return to work. By being on the picket line, you will be able to persuade your patients not to cross the line.
Do I keep my same job classification and pay once a strike is over and I go back to work?
A ULP strike would not affect your job classification. The terms of returning to work depend on the contract negotiated.
What if I have more questions?
There are many questions members will have throughout this process. Stay in touch with your steward, bargaining team member, or union representative throughout this process. The most important factor in winning a strong contract is our power and our solidarity. Staying informed is critical to staying united.

National Bargaining
After two days of National Bargaining with Kaiser Permanente, they have refused to make any movement on the across-the-board wages, contract alignment, patient care/staffing, and pay equity. Kaiser is wasting our time, while a strike by our sibling unions is imminent
On Friday, October 3, five Alliance unions – OFNHP, UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, UNITE HERE Local 5, and HNHP – issued 10-day strike notices to Kaiser Permanente. With no movement from Kaiser over these last two days, and no more bargaining dates set, they may be forced to strike starting October 14 at 7:00 a.m. (local time) through Sunday, October 19. This is a powerful moment of solidarity and strength across our Alliance. Reach out to your local union for information on how to support an Alliance strike line near you before/after your shift, or on your lunch break.
Pause in LMP Partnership
UFCW, in solidarity with other Alliance unions who may be forced to strike on October 14, has paused participation in Labor Management Partnership (LMP) activities effective noon PST on October 8, 2025. This decision follows a growing pattern of disregard for partnership principles, including delays, scripted responses, and a lack of genuine collaboration.
The LMP was designed to strengthen Kaiser Permanente through shared problem-solving and improved patient care, but it cannot function when leadership stops listening. After nearly three decades of proven success in quality, safety, and affordability, Kaiser’s failure to uphold these values marks a breaking point. Until further notice, UFCW will suspend participation in LMP councils, committees, and initiatives, while continuing all contractual meetings and grievance processes.
If you have any questions, reach out to your union rep.
CLS
We previously reached tentative agreements at the local table but we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete. We will also need to support our siblings in the pharmacy unit during their strike vote and if they go on strike.
Pharmacy ULP Strike Vote
Kaiser has engaged in UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES in an attempt to weaken our ability to achieve a fair contract at the bargaining table.
UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES are actions that intimidate, interfere, or limit your ability to exercise your rights under the law or your contract. They include actions meant to undermine our power to negotiate collectively, including unlawfully surveilling and intimidating members engaging in union activities connected to your contract campaign.
KAISER HAS ENGAGED IN THE FOLLOWING UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES:
- Denying access to a union representative
- Failure to provide information necessary to bargaining
- Surveilling, intimidating, and interrogating workers over Union activity
- Several other unfair labor practices against our siblings in the Alliance of Healthcare Unions
Kaiser Pharmacy workers are taking part in an Unfair Labor Practice (ULPs) Strike Authorization Vote. Your Kaiser Pharmacy bargaining committee recommends a “YES” vote to authorize a ULP strike.
Voting Period
- Start date: Monday, October 13, 2025 (8:00 AM)
- End date: Wednesday, October 15, 2025 (4:00 PM)
Voting will be conducted via the secure online platform ElectionBuddy. Check your email and text messages for your unique voting link and instructions. To be able to vote, please make sure we have your up-to-date and accurate email address and/or cell phone number on file. If you do not receive your ballot on Monday morning, please contact your union representative.
CLS members – while your contract doesn’t expire until next year, and you can’t strike at this time, please support your UFCW siblings as they take this crucial vote. Continue to share your stories on social media, wear your union shirts, and show your solidarity!
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the voting process, or anything else, please reach out to your Steward, Union Rep, or Bargaining Committee Member.

Yesterday, our sibling locals in the Alliance of Health Care Unions, HNHP, UNAC/UHCP, UNITE HERE Local 5, OFNHP Local 5017, and USW 7600, issued 10-day strike notices to Kaiser.
National and local bargaining continues next week October 6-10. If no agreement is reached, our siblings will begin a five-day strike starting at 7:00 AM on October 14. This collective action sends a powerful message to Kaiser about the need to bargain in good faith and respect frontline healthcare workers.
UFCW is also taking action.
Kaiser has broken the law by interfering with our rights, denying access to union representatives from visiting you at work. This is an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP), and harms our ability to communicate with you and protect your rights.
In response, we’re holding ULP strike authorization votes for UFCW Kaiser Pharmacy members the week of October 13.
To help all Kaiser members understand the Pharmacy ULP strike vote, and how we can support our striking siblings on the picket line, we’re holding webinars on Thursday, October 9th at 8am and 7pm.
CLS members – while your contract doesn’t expire, and you can’t strike at this time, please attend the webinars below to learn more about the current state of negotiations, and how you can help support your siblings in both UFCW and the Alliance.

Our National Agreement between Kaiser Permanente and the 22 Alliance of Health Care Unions expired this morning. While national bargaining continued this week, we also worked at our local CLS and Pharmacy tables to resolve remaining items. After several long days and late nights, we reached tentative agreements on our CLS and Pharmacy contracts.
However, at the national table, we remain far apart on key issues: contract alignment and fair wage increases. No significant progress has been made on these priorities, and our work continues until national bargaining is fully resolved.
Pharmacy
After long negotiations, we reached a tentative agreement at the pharmacy table early Wednesday morning. Productive discussions with management addressed schedule rotations, on-call, and registry workers. We secured language clarifying the rotation process and held firm against introducing on-call or registry workers. We also agreed to continue discussions on staffing during community disasters. Late into the night, we secured wins on longevity increases and additional differential pay for hours worked in the ambulatory oncology setting.
While this is a tentative agreement at the pharmacy table, we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete.
While we are working hard to secure a good contract, Kaiser is breaking the law, refusing to allow a union rep to visit facilities. With our UFCW local pharmacy contracts expiring on November 1, 2025, we are scheduling Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike votes for Kaiser Pharmacy only, starting October 13.
CLS
At the CLS table, we reached a tentative agreement late Monday night. Previously, only a few economic topics remained unresolved, but this week we secured contract upgrades, including increased longevity pay at each step and additional paid time for educational programs for benefited members.
Again, while this is a tentative agreement at the CLS table, we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete. We will also need to support our siblings in the pharmacy unit during their strike vote and if they go on strike. Look for more info from your Local UFCW Union about upcoming webinars where you can learn more about how you can support.
What’s Next
Despite our efforts, Kaiser has chosen to break the law by engaging in Unlawful Labor Practices (ULPs), blocking union reps from visiting you at work. This obstruction has damaged our ability to keep you informed and is a violation of the law. That’s why we are scheduling a ULP strike authorization vote for KP Pharmacy members.
The pharmacy ULP strike authorization vote will be held the week of October 13th. Stay tuned for voting instructions and more details coming soon.
Take Action
To help all Kaiser members understand the Pharmacy ULP Strike Vote, we will hold webinars on Thursday, October 9th at 8am and 7pm.

How many times do we need to say “No” Kaiser?
If no progress at National Bargaining, we may need to conduct a strike vote
We came to negotiations today ready to bargain with Kaiser on our pharmacy contract, but Kaiser once again gave us nothing. We want to come to a deal that we can recommend to you, but we’re not willing to accept anything less than we deserve. Kaiser is stuck on their issues and they’re just wasting our time.
We have National Bargaining scheduled for next Monday September 29 – Wednesday October 1 where we will be able to discuss this local contract. If nothing changes at those sessions, we may need to stand up and show Kaiser we’re fed up by conducting a strike vote.
Now is the time to show our unity. Sign the strike pledge, join the union actions below, and make sure Kaiser sees that UFCW members are standing shoulder to shoulder with our Alliance siblings and won’t back down in the face of their stall tactics.
- Sign the strike pledge to show Kaiser you are ready to do whatever it takes to win the strong contract we deserve: ufcw324.org/strikepledge
- DO NOT participate in Kaiser Permanente’s People Pulse survey. This action is a direct response to stalled progress at the bargaining table and Kaiser’s unwillingness to fully recognize the value of healthcare professionals. No Progress, No Pulse! Wear your stickers to show your co-workers you are standing strong!
- Attend an upcoming action supporting USW 7600 Kaiser Workers

Our Alliance Siblings Vote to Strike!
Information on how UFCW members can support and your rights
Across the country, healthcare workers are sending a powerful message to Kaiser Permanente: we are united, strong, and ready to fight for the fair contracts we deserve. Our siblings in UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, Unite Here Local 5, OFNHP, and HNHP have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if necessary. These votes don’t mean an automatic strike, but they show Kaiser just how serious healthcare workers are about safe staffing, fair wages, and respect on the job.
For UFCW members, we are not in a position to take a strike vote or strike at this time. Our contracts are in effect until November 1, 2025 (Pharmacy) and February 1, 2026 (CLS/MLT), and we can’t strike until our contracts have expired.
But that does not mean we are standing on the sidelines. Our bargaining teams have been clear: we will not accept takeaways, and we will not let Kaiser disrespect our work. National bargaining resumes next week, and we will continue pressing Kaiser on the issues that matter most – wage increases, contract alignment, wage equity, and respect for the work we do every day.
If a strike is called by our Alliance siblings, you can support your union siblings by joining the strike on your off time – lunches, before or after your shift and days off. Now is the time to show our unity. Sign the strike pledge, join union actions, and make sure Kaiser sees that UFCW members are standing shoulder to shoulder with our Alliance siblings. Together, we are stronger, and together, we will win the fair contracts all healthcare workers deserve.

September 22, 2025 – CLS Bargaining Update
We’ve Made it Clear – We’re Not Accepting Takeaways in this New Contract
Be prepared – make a plan to join your co-workers on the picket line in your off time!
To be honest, we’re very frustrated with how bargaining is going on our CLS/MLT contract with Kaiser. We’ve been open from the start – we won’t accept any takeaways in our new contract, but Kaiser clearly isn’t hearing us. After bargaining for five months, they’ve now added new proposals that would take away from the current monetary provisions in the contract you are entitled to. We’re not going to let Kaiser bully us and waste our time.
Our brothers, sisters and siblings at UNAC, Steelworkers, Unite Here Local 5, OFNHP, and HNHP voted almost unanimously to strike and send a message to Kaiser, and we’re prepared to do everything we can within our legal rights to stand beside them. Make sure you sign the strike pledge to show your co-workers that we’re united in our commitment to protect and uplift our professions and the patients we serve: Complete the strike pledge!
If a strike is called, make a plan to join them on the picket line when you’re off the clock! Non-work time includes your lunch break!
We’re back at the National Bargaining Table next week on September 29 to October 1 to ensure all locals in the Alliance of Healthcare Unions get the fair contract we deserve. Those negotiations are covering big issues we know are important to you – wage increases, contract alignment, wage equity, union input on patient scheduling templates and more. At those negotiations we will also discuss the local CLS/MLT contract and try to resolve these outstanding issues. We’re determining if we need to schedule more bargaining dates locally and will let you know.
In the meantime, it’s important that Kaiser sees our solidarity and strength by taking part in the actions listed below:

September 19, 2025 – CLS Bargaining Update
No Interest in Takeaways
We met with Kaiser for two days this week. Unfortunately, KP continues to push proposals that would take away important benefits from our contract. While conversations have been ongoing, no progress has been made, and much work remains to reach a fair CLS/MLT agreement. We return to local bargaining on Monday and will share a full update then.
From September 29 to October 1, we’ll be back at the National Bargaining table, banding together for the fair contract we deserve. In the meantime, let’s show our solidarity and strength by joining the actions listed below.
Take Action
- Complete the strike pledge to show Kaiser you are ready to do whatever it takes, up to and including going on strike, to win the strong contract we deserve.
- DO NOT participate in Kaiser Permanente’s People Pulse survey. This action is a direct response to stalled progress at the bargaining table and Kaiser’s unwillingness to fully recognize the value of healthcare professionals. No Progress, No Pulse!

This week we brought our local CLS and Pharmacy tables to national bargaining in an effort to make progress on resolving the remaining issues. We met for four days this week and unfortunately, little to no progress has been made.
- At the CLS table, management has wasted the majority of the days stating that they are gathering data and working on solutions but we have not seen the product of that yet.
- At the pharmacy table, while we reached a tentative agreement on language that enhances the grievance and arbitration procedure, we were not pleased to hear about management’s continued interest in bringing in agency workers after we had previously conveyed that this proposal goes against our core principles.
Across both tables, we have pressed management in interest-based discussions about the urgent need for economic upgrades like longevity pay. Our dedication to Kaiser Permanente deserves recognition and a fair contract. Investment in us is essential to retaining a strong workforce.
In the coming weeks we will return to the local tables to continue the fight for a fair contract. The CLS table will meet again on September 17 and 19, and the Pharmacy table on September 25.
Take Action
-
- Complete the strike pledge to show Kaiser you are ready to do whatever it takes, up to and including going on strike, to win the strong contract we deserve.
- DO NOT participate in Kaiser Permanente’s People Pulse survey. This action is a direct response to stalled progress at the bargaining table and Kaiser’s unwillingness to fully recognize the value of healthcare professionals. No Progress, No Pulse!
September 4, 2025
We’ve met with Kaiser for three days this week, and we’re happy to report that we’ve made progress on our CLS/MLT contract. We were able to agree on per diem guidelines, including double time for per diem employees who work more than 12 hours and streamlining the process for per diem availability, which allows for permanent employees to take off time when they need it.
However, despite this movement today, Kaiser still hasn’t addressed our economic issues, which include upgrades that allow for MLT parity. We’ve scheduled new bargaining sessions during National Bargaining next week (September 9, 10 and 11), where we expect to address these most important economic issues.
To hear the updates from National Bargaining as soon as they’re available, join us for the 2025 National Bargaining Virtual Town Halls, scheduled for Thursday, September 11th at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM (PT), and Friday, September 12th at 7:00 AM (PT). These calls will go over the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract and inform you about upcoming actions.

Some Progress Made; Kaiser Still Stalling on Economic Issues
After five months of bargaining with Kaiser, we finally made progress on our pharmacy contract today. We were able to agree on providing more full-time positions, establishing consistent staffing, and giving employees who change positions more flexibility to return to their former position.
However, despite this movement today, Kaiser is still stalling on addressing our economic issues, such as longevity pay and inpatient oncology premium pay. These are important issues that honor our dedication to Kaiser and recognize hazardous work, and we think it’s important to address here at the local bargaining table.
While we wait for Kaiser to get its act together, join us for the next 2025 National Bargaining Virtual Town Halls, happening Thursday, September 11th at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM (PT) and Friday, September 22nd at 7:00 AM (PT) to hear about the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract.

What if I have more questions?
There are many questions members will have throughout this process. Stay in touch with your steward, bargaining team member, or union representative throughout this process. The most important factor in winning a strong contract is our power and our solidarity. Staying informed is critical to staying united.

August 12, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
Why does Kaiser keep stalling?
We entered into these last two scheduled days with Kaiser to bargain our CLS/MLT contract, prepared to reach a deal that addressed our priority issues – from wages, work-life balance, and more. However, Kaiser spent the first day talking only about one issue – their requested per diem changes. On the second day, they arrived hours later than promised. Why does Kaiser keep stalling?
We have had some productive dialogue on issues like the grievance procedure, vacation payout and Kaiser’s change of the workday, but we are still far apart on important economic issues including longevity and sixth day pay. We think it’s important to honor workers who dedicate their time to Kaiser, and their silence speaks volumes about how they think about us.
We have agreed to meet with the company again on September 2, 3 and 4, 2025, but we don’t want these dates to be wasted. When we reconvene, Kaiser should be prepared to meet with us from the outset and reach a deal that we can confidently recommend to our colleagues.
In the meantime, National Bargaining will occur next week, and the Alliance of Healthcare Unions will be holding three National Bargaining Town Hall calls, where you can hear about the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract.

August 1, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
We met with Kaiser Friday, August 1st for continued bargaining on our Kaiser Pharmacy contract. We stood strong on the principles that matter most, and made sure Kaiser heard us loud and clear.
We had several robust conversations in which management listened to the importance of how significant life events may impact our ability to commit to new roles. We also explored the option of utilizing mediation within the grievance procedure as a way to discuss and resolve issues prior to escalating to the arbitration process.
Kaiser continues to want to discuss on-call and temporary agency workers. We refuse to allow the company to explore ideas that could erode our part-time and full-time benefited positions and jeopardize the quality of care our patients receive. Additionally we expressed our opposition to the company’s interests in limiting the flexibility we have once we begin or transfer into a position.
We were in alignment on some issues and far apart on others. Despite our efforts to have interest-based conversations, we were met with resistance at the end of the day when the employer rejected several of our proposals.
This session was frustrating, to say the least. It seems that Kaiser is losing sight of the interest-based process and is not willing to consider our point of view. However, we know the battle is not over yet as we will continue to stay strong so we can achieve the best contract.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser on August 29, 2025 with a federal mediator to facilitate the process.

July 29, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
Bargaining is an Uphill Battle
We met with Kaiser last Wednesday, July 23 and today, Tuesday, July 29, for more bargaining sessions on our Kaiser CLS/MLT contract.
We had good conversations about the importance of work-life balance and the need to have time to observe personal holidays. We work hard and deserve to have a day off so we can each celebrate a holiday or occasion that has individual meaning. KP has built its brand on providing people care so they could “thrive.” They take pride in their diversity, equity and inclusion so we urge them to hold true to their brand and provide workers with the space to express their cultural belonging.
We also spent some time discussing the use of per diems and we believe we are getting closer to a solution that improves staffing levels for KP while providing necessary protections for per diem workers.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser on Monday, August 11, 2025, and Tuesday, August 12, 2025, to continue discussing our contract. But these are our last two days currently scheduled with the company. We’ve been meeting since April and it’s time Kaiser gets its act together. Kaiser needs to come back next session prepared to get a deal that we can recommend to you.
We did come to a tentative agreement ensuring the commitment of new hires, but we still have a lot of outstanding issues that Kaiser needs to address. Bargaining is always an uphill battle, but we’re almost at the peak. Wear your gold shirts and continue to take photos with our campaign signs! We have to show Kaiser that we are powerful.

Kaiser needs to stop dragging their feet and address our issues
Kaiser Pharmacy Bargaining Update July 18, 2025
We’ve been bargaining our new contract now for three months. Today, like all days, we came prepared. We presented 6 proposals (not new issues, interests we’ve been discussing from day one) relating to vacation, corrective action, longevity pay, reimbursement for the cost of certification and licensure renewal, and a 24-hour guarantee. We got no response.
After three months, they should be able to respond to something during our session.
Even worse, rather than addressing the serious concerns we have raised about staffing, Kaiser is proposing to use more on-call help and non-union temporary agency workers. We need to make it clear to Kaiser that these are not the solutions to their failure to hire sufficient staff to serve our patients.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser on July 28, 2025, to continue discussing our pharmacy contract. Meanwhile, wear your gold shirts and take photos with our campaign signs!

We’re frustrated
CLS Bargaining Update – July 8, 2025
We met with Kaiser on Wednesday, July 2, and today, Tuesday, July 8, to discuss our CLS/MLT contract where we continued to have discussions on our priorities. We had robust discussions about the grievance procedure as we want to find a way to expedite the process so that we can get a timely resolution to our issues. We also discussed how per diems are used and ways we can explore utilizing them more efficiently.
At the end of the day, we were able to sign one Tentative Agreement that contains small clean up language regarding timekeeping.
After today’s bargaining session, we’ve reached a point of frustration with Kaiser. We’ve had to remind the employer several times about embracing the interest-based bargaining mindset and the importance of working in partnership. We expected to be farther along after meeting for three months, but have not seen much progress. At our next session, we hope to see more movement from Kaiser on issues that are important to us.
We will meet with Kaiser again on July 23 and July 29. In the meantime, National Bargaining will occur next week, and the Alliance of Healthcare Unions will be holding three National Bargaining Town Hall calls, where you can hear about the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract.

Continued Discussions and one TA!
Kaiser Pharmacy Bargaining Update June 20, 2025
We met with Kaiser today to negotiate our pharmacy contract, during which we had more discussions on our economic proposals, including increases for employees who have translation responsibilities, longevity pay to honor workers for their dedication to Kaiser Permanente and hazard pay for all of us who work in highly dangerous environments.
We also discussed an inpatient pharmacy technician differential, as well as a differential for anyone performing ambulatory oncology work, so they receive an increase for hours worked. We also spent time discussing options to streamline our grievance procedure, including a mediation step that will provide more guidance before escalating to arbitration.
We ended the day by reaching a tentative agreement with the company on the vacation scheduling period.
It was not all good news though. We discussed bereavement leave, and the company wants to take away our ability to support our spouses or partners when their family passes away. This is unacceptable and we will continue to work to ensure we can support our families no matter what they look like.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser locally on July 18, 2025, to discuss our pharmacy contract further. Meanwhile, wear your yellow shirts and take photos with our campaign signs!

Kaiser Listened as we Spoke Out Today About Our Working Conditions
We met with Kaiser today to negotiate our pharmacy contract, during which we discussed creating more full-time positions and increasing opportunities for employees to secure these positions. We also spent time with the company discussing extending the probationary period to evaluate new hires and reviewing the transfer language to ensure employees are retained.
Lastly, we gave economic proposals to the company, including increases for employees who have translation responsibilities, longevity pay to honor workers for their dedication to Kaiser Permanente and hazard pay for all of us who work in highly dangerous environments.
We were able to speak out today on our economic proposals and told Kaiser how our working conditions in places like oncology are hazardous and make us worried to bring home toxins to our families. Our committee really spoke from the heart, moving all who were in the room. We felt heard and will continue to have conversations around these important issues in further sessions.
We also want to give you an update on National Bargaining. National Bargaining occurred June 3-5, and we reached Tentative Agreements with Kaiser on key retiree and pension benefits:
- Additional retiree medical benefits for our retirees 85 and older
- Increased retiree medical benefits
- Improved pension benefits.
These wins mark incredible progress already, and are the direct result of our members’ unity, action, and ongoing engagement. At national bargaining, we also introduced a full economic proposal with our key priorities, including historic wage increases, standardized healthcare across units, and job protections to prevent outsourcing and keep KP work union work. You can view a full update about this latest session of national bargaining here: https://ufcw324.org/kaiser-updates-2025/

We’re Finally Getting All of Our Interests Out on the Table
CLS/MLT Bargaining Update
We met with Kaiser today to bargain on our CLS/MLT contract, where we talked about potential compensation for high complexity testing, the integration of classification seniority for vacation bidding, and updating bereavement leave policies. We also spent time discussing options to streamline our grievance procedure, including a mediation step that will provide more guidance before escalating to arbitration.
We received more proposals from management that will require more discussions before our next session. They proposed adverse changes to our bereavement leave benefits that prevent us from having valuable time with our families during times of loss. However, the other proposals may advance our partnership interests and we look forward to exploring them further.
We do have good news.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser locally on July 2, 2025, to discuss our CLS contract further. Meanwhile, follow the UFCW 324 and Alliance of Healthcare Unions social media accounts! These platforms host the most up-to-date information on what’s going on at bargaining. KP Not Interested in Solving Work/Life Balance
Management rejected our increased holiday, PTO and vacation cash out proposals
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our fourth day of bargaining on our pharmacy contract.
Despite work/life balance being one of our key interests, management rejected our proposals for increased holidays and personal time off, as well as an automatic cash out proposal for our hardworking members to be paid what they’re owed when they reach maximum accrual without having to request it.
They also made a proposal to create an on-call job status claiming that this would allow for more time off granting – however we already have strong staffing language therefore, we will further explore if any additional benefits exist.
One of the bright spots in our negotiations today was reaching a tentative agreement on convening to discuss a career pathway for outpatient members to receive the necessary training to qualify for positions within the inpatient setting.
We will meet with KP again on Friday, June 13th. In the meantime, we need to show KP we are not backing down from fighting for the contract we deserve. Here’s how you can stay engaged:

Kaiser Management is Slow and Steady, but Not Yet Ready
KP needs to respond to our outstanding issues
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our fourth day of bargaining on our CLS/MLT contract. We started the day by reminding KP why we’re here, and revisiting our core mindsets of improving our morale and work/life balance, staffing for operational efficiency, and maintaining an available and committed workforce to continue to deliver quality care to our communities.
hey were very resistant to working with us on our shared interest in maintaining a committed, stable workforce when it comes to the overwhelming number of per diems at some of our facilities compared to full-time or part-time employees.
KP also wasn’t ready to commit to putting state law regarding overtime into the contract, or to respond to our many non-economic proposals around classification seniority, PTO, the corrective action process, part-time conversion, or streamlining the grievance process that have been in their court since last month.
We made it clear we expect them to have answers to our non-economic proposals when we meet again on May 28.
Stay engaged:

Aligned or Not Aligned? That is the Question
Kaiser Bargaining Update
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our third day of bargaining on our CLS/MLT contract. We started the day by presenting a lot of important worker interests to the company and had robust discussions. However we are still not aligned on important issues to us such as just culture, work-life balance, and staffing.
We were hoping to get more accomplished today and we urge KP to take the next couple of weeks to seriously consider the issues we raised.
We will meet with KP again on Friday, May 16, 2025, and send you another update on the progress made at that time. In the meantime, here are some upcoming activities where you can show KP that we’re united for the contract we deserve:
Attend the rally/picket action on Monday, May 5! The Alliance will be holding a kickoff rally and picket action in Harbor City at 5PM on May 5, the day before bargaining on our national contract starts. Fill out and take a picture with our bargaining poster! Throughout the first national bargaining session from May 6 to May 8, we’re going to be passing out posters you can fill out what you’re fighting for on and take pictures with. Members of the bargaining committee will have posters, or you can contact your union representative to get a hold of one.

Slow but Steady: Kaiser Bargaining Update
What happened during our second bargaining session?
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our second day of bargaining on our pharmacy contract. We were able to come to an agreement on using gender neutral terms in the contract and had some productive conversations with the company regarding their interest around the probationary period. We ended the day by presenting a new interest to KP around bridging seniority when returning to previous positions.
The conversations were engaging and we were able to express the areas of potential improvement in our facilities.
We will meet with KP again on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, and send you another update on the progress made at that time. In the meantime, here are some upcoming activities where you can show KP that we’re united for the contract we deserve:

April 7, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
What happened during our first bargaining session?
Work-life balance was the theme of the day
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our first day of bargaining on our pharmacy contract. We started the day by defining our priorities for this year’s contract negotiations and setting expectations on how we will achieve an agreement that benefits both the members and the communities we serve. Negotiations occur through interest-based bargaining and today we focused on our work-life balance. We discussed the time-off approval process and the company’s response time.
One of management’s interests, which we also discussed today, was our dedication to staying in positions longer. We followed up by reiterating our commitment to our patients and agreed to continue the conversation after conducting a member survey to get more information.
This was a good first day and we’re hopeful about our future ability to get the contract you deserve.
We meet with KP again on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, and we will send another update for you on what happened then. In the meantime, here’s how you can show KP that we’re united for the contract we deserve:

April 2, 2025 – CLS/MLT Bargaining
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our first day of bargaining on our CLS/MLT contract. We started the day by defining our priorities for these contract negotiations and setting expectations on how we will achieve a contract that benefits both the members and the communities we serve.
These conversations were productive and by the end of the day, we had agreed on cleaning up some pieces of the language in the contract and have a good jumping off point for our next session next week.
We had interest-based conversations and we’re hopeful about our future ability to get the contract you deserve.

It’s Time to Get Ready for 2025 Bargaining!
CLS Bargaining Starts Wednesday April 2! Pharmacy Bargaining Starts Monday April 7!
Dear Kaiser members,
It’s time to get ready for 2025 bargaining! This year, Kaiser members throughout the country are coming together with one voice to fight for a contract that will better their futures. We’re 22 separate local unions but we’re all fighting for the same thing: a stronger future for workers and our patients.
A stronger future starts with a strong contract that provides:
• The best wages, not just fair wages
• Protections for current health benefits and pensions
• Staffing levels that allow us to focus on patient care and not burnout
• Partnership improvements
• Limitations for subcontracting
We can win a contract that does all of this and more by standing together and showing KP that you’re willing to fight and raise your voice to ensure a better workplace for you and your co-workers.
How Bargaining Will Work
The first scheduled bargaining session for CLS members with Kaiser is on April 2, 2025. Pharmacy bargaining starts on April 7, 2025, and national bargaining starts on May 6, 2025. At those bargaining sessions, we, the worker bargaining committee and leaders from your union UFCW, will present proposals to Kaiser based on the contract surveys you completed.
Throughout the process, both labor and management will have discussions regarding their various interests in making improvements that benefit both parties in an attempt to reach a “tentative agreement” on a new contract. This tentative agreement then goes to the members to review it and vote before becoming final. If a majority of workers vote to accept the contract, only then will it be ratified and go into effect.
Throughout bargaining, we, the bargaining committee, will send coordinated updates to keep you informed of what happened at each session, what the company said or did, and to let you know what you can do to fight for the contract you deserve.
