Last night, President Greg Conger, Secretary-Treasurer Andrea Zinder and Executive Vice President Matt Bell conducted a tele town hall meeting to update retail food members on contract negotiations. Almost 1000 members listened in and asked questions about the status of bargaining and how they could help.
During the introduction, President Conger explained that bargaining is going extremely slow because the companies (Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons) have been unwilling to meet with any regularity and have continually rejected all union proposals. He explained that if this pattern does not change, a strike vote will be necessary.
Secretary Treasurer Zinder discussed the importance of member participation by wearing buttons and helping to engage customers outside of the stores. She announced 2 days of hand billing next week, May 21 and 22 from 3 – 6 p.m. at the following locations: Vons #1626, 3650 S. Bristol Street, Santa Ana; Ralphs #165, 5951 Del Amo Blvd., Lakewood and Albertsons #1585, 4550 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange. She also urged members to check out our negotiation web site – www.foodfightus.com.
In response to questions from members, Conger and Zinder reiterated that protection of pension and medical are critical issues as is the issue of fair wage increases for experienced clerks and the importance of protecting higher wages for senior employees in light of the increasing minimum wage.
